Uganda: How Whatsapp Pay will smash mobile money in Uganda and Kenya

With over 19 Million Ugandans connected on the internet as of Dec, 2017, which is approximately 42.9% of the population according to Internet World StatsWhatsap is going to change the game of mobile payment.

The mobile money and mobile banking platforms are at stake here, with billions of shillings pocketed by MTN and Airtel annually as sending and withdrawing fees, the industry is juicy and obviously has an even better outlook as more and more Ugandans get online each day, Whatsap pay’s timing doesn’t come as a surprise.

However, international mobile payment platforms such as PayPal have had a difficult time penetrating the local market in Uganda. Banks in Uganda have been wrestling to win the mobile payments war.

Centenary bank for example is investing heavily in a cente agency banking project that aims to catch up with mobile banking. Other banks are also on the same path, these include Equity bank’s Equiduuka, Eco bank and more banks in the pipeline.
